10 Things to Say to Your Child

What words do you say to your kids when they leave the house or exit the car? Do you ever wish you’d said something more affirming?

I left my kids with words of anxiety. “Did you remember your science project? Are you ready for the algebra test? Do you have the signed form for your teacher?” But I’ve learned the power of words can cause a child to soar beyond what one ever dreamed, or words can slay and stop a dream in its tracks.

As we approach the new school year, let’s be intentional about the words we speak to our kids. Think about the words you say to your child when they walk out the door to the bus or exit the car when you drop them off. What if we sent our kids off with words that cause them to stand taller, act braver, think wiser, and believe bigger? The Bible says,” “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21).

I’ve been studying the book of Esther this summer. Consider the words of Mordecai after King Xerxes signed an edict to eradicate all the Jewish people. Mordecai informed Esther of the king’s order. Esther knew the consequences of approaching the king without being summoned: death. But Mordecai instilled these words into her spine: “Who knows, perhaps you have come to your royal position for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14).

After three days of fasting and prayer, Esther, infused with these bold words, approached the king. You may be familiar with the story, but if not, the king heard her plea. The Jewish people fought and overpowered their enemies.

What if our words infused boldness in our kids? What if we sent our kids off into the world with a blessing instead of bawling out so they grow up like Esther? Your tween or teenager might give you some backlash, but don’t stop the blessings. Show them you mean it.

  1. I love you! God loves you.
  2. You are strong and courageous.
  3. You are chosen and not rejected.
  4. God has a purpose for your life.
  5. With God, all things are possible.
  6. You’re a leader and not a follower.
  7. You’re fearfully and wonderfully made.
  8. You belong to Christ. You are His ambassador.
  9. God is with you and in you.
  10. God sees you and cares for you.

What other phrases have you used to speak blessing over your kids? What words did your parents say to you that you still remember?
