Dear New Mom (or Mom-to-be),

Congratulations! A lifetime of adventure awaits you. As you cradle your wee one, marvel at this child. Enjoy this season of life for the time will whisk by. Poof! You’ll wake up one morning and your baby will be wearing a graduation robe and longing for freedom at college far away from you.

For now, you get to influence and nurture this child for the next 18 years. I know it’s hard to imagine that this compliant baby cooing in your arms will ever want to leave you. So while your baby snuggles safe in your arms, prepare yourself for this weighty yet honorable responsibility. But how?

Oh, if only someone had sent instructions. A cheat sheet maybe. Shoot, some days you’d even take directions in Chinese.

Do not worry! Someone has given instructions. You may not think of the Bible as a book for raising children, but God’s word speaks to parenting. The scriptures will get you through the worst of times and the best of times (and your child will put you through both). Prayer and scripture will equip you in training this child in the way she should go (Proverbs 22:6).

I’ve written a few verses you can pray as you embark on this parenting journey. May they spark other scriptures to guide you in your role as mom.

Lord, give me the wisdom, strength, and fortitude to train up this child in the way he should go so even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 ESV

Lord, I stand before you and pronounce that you are Lord over this family this day and forevermore. As for me and my family, we will serve and worship you only. Joshua 24:15 ESV

Father, your word says, “If anyone of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him.” Father, I ask for wisdom in raising this child. Guide my husband and me as we make choices for her spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical health. Let me not doubt but ask boldly and with confidence knowing you are able to do what you say you can do. James 1:5-6 ESV

Merciful Father, doubts and fears crowd my mind. I ask for help to take every negative, fearful and doubting thought captive and to obey Christ and his promises instead. 2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV

Lord, you are my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? You are the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Remind me of this promise, Lord, when fear quickens. Shine your light in my darkness. Psalm 27:1 ESV

Father your Word says “Fear not for I am with you; be not dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Increase my faith, Lord! I boldly believe you will help me and hold me now, and in the months and years ahead. Isaiah 41:10 ESV

You can do this mama. By the grace of God, you will grow into the awesome mom God designed you to be for such a time as this.

Sincerely,

From a mom who is rooting for you
